The Intuaid Project - first aid for voluntary
naval rescue

How might we help naval paramedics to recognize life-threatening situations as simple as possible and to react to them safely?

Introduction

In collaboration with the start-up 'The Intuaid Project' we developed a first aid app for voluntary naval rescue. In workshops with medical experts and sea rescuers, we explored the special characteristics of first aid situations at sea. We took a user centered- design approach. Part of this process was user research and prototyping, to evaluate ideas and workflows.

Challenge

The rescuers always focus on their patients and their own safety on board. They are not able to follow complex instructions in addition to patient care.

Result

The app supports trained and untrained first-aider in emergency situations through direct orientation and reliable guidance. The first-aid process is subdivided into three steps. In the end, the user gets a clear recommendation, how to act with the injured patient.

Concept

Questioning the current first-aid process, we designed a new structure to provide immediate first-aid.

Priority I

The aim is to get the instructions to save lives as quickly as possible. We first ask the user the most important questions: awareness, breathing, pulse, bleeding, and burns.

Priority II

As soon as the user determines that the patient is not in a life-threatening situation, he or she reaches the second priority level. This is where patient data is collected, which forms an important data pool for the patient file.

Priority III & Treatment

The following list of questions adapts to personal data. The questions asked adapt dynamically to the previous one in order to get as safely as possible to a first aid treatment.

Preserve vital parameter

The situation is stressful. The patient's survival is at stake. The rescuer has an easy and safe choice between two options, underlined by clear icons.

Collect basic data

The situation is less stressful. The rescuer can take more time to determine important basic medical data.

Prevent deterioration

All important queries were made. The situation is more relaxed. The rescuer observes the patient and prevents deterioration of the condition. While going back to the shore, he can detect accompanying symptoms which may be necessary for treatment.

Voluntary naval rescuers

The team consists of trained and untrained first responders. They work on a voluntary basis in on-call duty. In emergencies at sea, they receive emergency calls and use boats to get to their missions.

First Aid situation

Naval rescuers often work under bad weather conditions and restricted visibility. On board, where the second hand is usually already needed for self- protection, complex inputs and interactions cannot always be carried out.

Patient & patient data

First responders do not provide full medical care. Patients are only provided exclusively with emergency care, taken ashore by boat and handed over to a hospital. At this point, it is important to transfer patient data to the physicians and hospitals.

We decided to give the App a high contrast and clear designed screens. Through that, it is easy to understand even when it is rainy or shaking.
